A Study of Penicillin and Cephalosporins

Abstract
Penicillin is one of the most important of the antibiotics.
The basic structure of the penicillin¡¯s consists of a thiazolidine ring (A) connect-ed to a beta-lactam ring (B), to which is attached a side chain. Classification of the penicillin¡¯s are 1. penicillin G, 2. penicillinase-resistant penicillin¡¯s, 3. ampicillin, amoxicillin, hetacillin, cyclacillin, becampicillin, 4. carbenicillin and its indanyl ester and 5. other
extended-spectrum penicillin¡¯s.
The first source of the cephalosporins was isolated in 1945 by Brotzu. Cephalosporins contains a side chain derived from D-?-aminoadipic acid, which is condensed with a dihydrothiazine beta-lactam ring system. Classification by generations in based general
features of antimicrobial activity. First generation cephalosporins are cephapirin, cephalexin, cepharadine and cefadroxy1, second generation cephalosporins are cefamandole, cefoxitin, cefaclor, cefuroxime and cefonicid, third generation cephalosporins are cefotaxime, Mox-olactam, ceftizoxime and cefotetan.
